Since we know that all living organisms wether unicellular or multicellular are made up if cells in case multicellular and a single cell in case of unicellular.
And a unicellular organism inspite of being comprising only single cell is capable of performing all the essential life processes like Nutrition, Reproduction, Respiration, Excretion, Transportation etc. Which makes this unicellular organism capable of independent existence. Therefore cell is called the basic structural and functional unit of life.
